Peggy Barla, A True Volunteer
With more than 3,000 volunteer hours, Peggy Barla loves being at the library. From her earliest memory of living down the street from the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., Peggy exemplifies a true “fan”of libraries.
Peggy has spent the past 18 years working in the Friends Gift Shop, located just inside the Central Library’s front doors. She feels that her greatest contribution to the Gift Shop is to see that it keeps running on an even keel.
In addition, she is serving her second three-year term as Chairman of the Friends Gift Store. She contributes her current success to the good help she now has on the Board. Several of her mentors have been Sally Neilson, Dolores McGuire, Jan Lockman and Sharon Hathaway.
When asked what benefit she and others get from working a three-hour shift each week, she said, “You get to meet such nice people, work around such beautiful things and stay active—doing something worthwhile!”
Currently, we are looking for volunteers, like Peggy, who are interested in spending a few hours each week in the Friends Gift Shop. If you are interested, email the Volunteer Services Coordinator, or call (714) 375-5114, to fill out an application. After 3-4 weeks of training (3 hours a week), you too can enjoy sharing the love of libraries!
